Privacy Notice
This notice explains what happens to information about you when you read Greater Knoxville Notes or write to us. The short version: very little is collected, nothing is sold and nothing is used to follow you around the internet.
Who is responsible
The site is run by the small editorial team described on About. For any privacy question or request, email mail@greaterknoxville-shoneys.com.
Things this notebook leaves out
- No visitor counters or analytics software of any kind.
- No ad networks, sponsored widgets or affiliate tracking.
- No social media widgets that load content from other platforms.
- No accounts, logins, comment systems or newsletter sign-ups.
- No selling, renting or sharing of personal data.
Every page is a plain, prebuilt file. It does not run a database of visitors, and it has nothing to sign into.
Information that is processed
1. Hosting logs
Our pages reach your screen through a hosting company, as all websites do. To send a page to your browser and to keep the service secure, the provider's servers briefly record technical details of each request: your IP address, the date and time, the page requested, your browser type and whether the request succeeded. These logs are used to deliver the site, detect misuse and fix faults. They are kept for a short period and then deleted under the provider's own retention rules. We do not combine them with any other information or use them to profile visitors.
2. Your cookie choice
When you accept or decline the cookie notice, your browser stores that choice in its local storage so the notice does not reappear on every page. This entry stays on your device, is not sent to us and contains no personal details. Clearing this site's data in your browser settings removes it whenever you like. The page Cookies, Briefly walks through it in a few lines.
3. Email you send us
If you write to us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it and the content of your message. We use this only to read and answer your message and, if it points out an error, to correct the article. We keep correspondence as long as needed to handle it and then delete it, usually within a year, unless a longer period is needed for a legal reason. The form on our contact page simply opens your own email program; nothing is sent through the website itself.
Legal basis
Where data protection law such as the GDPR applies, hosting logs are processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website. Email correspondence is processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in answering readers, or to take steps you have asked for.
Your rights
Subject to the law where you live, you can generally ask us to:
- tell you which personal details of yours we hold, and send a copy;
- fix details that are wrong;
- erase them;
- pause our handling of them, or stop it if you object;
- hand them over in a format you can take elsewhere.
You may also lodge a complaint with the data protection regulator in your country.
A short email to the address above is all it takes to use any of them. We will answer within the time the law requires, normally within one month.
Links to other websites
A few articles point to outside websites. After you click through, the other site's privacy rules take over, and what it gathers is outside our hands.
Children
The site is written for adults and is not directed at children. If a child's details ever reached us by email, we would delete them.
Changes
If the way the site works changes, for example if a new feature handles data differently, this notice will be updated first.
