About Greater Knoxville Notes
Greater Knoxville Notes is a notebook for the practical side of everyday life. We write about the jobs that come up around a home, the gadgets and connections that keep it running, the evenings when people come over, the things worth buying (and the things worth skipping), and the sports and hobbies that fill the rest of the week.
The site has no grand mission. It exists because most of us keep a mental list of small tasks we have been meaning to sort out, and a clear, calm set of steps makes those tasks easier to start. Our job is to write those steps down properly.
What you will find here
- Home and DIY. Repairs, upgrades and small projects, with the safety notes in the place you will actually read them. A good example is our guide to fixing a running toilet.
- Tech at home. Routers, TVs, streaming setups, laptops and online tools, explained for people who would rather they simply worked. Start with how to reset a router.
- Get-togethers. Parties, game nights and events, mostly from the host's point of view, such as indoor activities that keep guests entertained.
- Shopping. Ordering online, choosing gifts and deciding what is worth the money.
- Sports and hobbies. Equipment, beginner questions and the pastimes people pick up in the evenings, from tennis to block-built worlds.
How the articles are put together
Every guide follows roughly the same shape: what the job is, what you need, the steps in order, what can go wrong and when to hand it to someone else. We prefer tables and checklists to long paragraphs, because a list is easier to follow with a screwdriver in one hand.
We do not invent figures, borrow expert quotes or claim qualifications we do not have. When a task needs a licensed electrician, a plumber or a doctor, the article says so plainly. The full approach is set out on How We Write, and the way we treat products and services is on Recommendation Rules.
Who writes here
A small team of four, each signing with a pen name and looking after a corner of the site. None of us is a tradesperson or a certified anything. We are careful people who read manuals, test what can be tested at home and write down what we learn. You can read more about the team and the reasons behind the site on The Notebook’s Purpose.
What the site is not
- It is not a shop. We do not sell anything and do not take a cut of sales.
- It is not a help desk. We cannot fix a device remotely or sort out an account with a provider.
- It is not professional advice. Our guides are general, and your home, your equipment and your situation may differ.
Getting around
If this is your first visit, How to Use This Site suggests a few starting points by topic. If you spot a mistake, our corrections promise explains how we handle it. And if you have a question we have not answered yet, the contact page is the place to send it.
Thank you for reading. We hope at least one item on your list gets crossed off this week.

How the notebook works
Four habits behind every page
They are not rules on a poster, just the way the guides get written.
Numbered, start to finish
Numbered the way you will do them, starting with the dull preparation.
Safety up front
Power, water and hidden-wire warnings sit before the first step, not after it.
Tables over walls of text
Comparisons and causes laid out so you can scan them with a tool in hand.
Honest limits
Each guide says plainly where a weekend job turns into a call to a professional.
At a glance, honestly
A few plain facts
Nothing dressed up.
Four writers share the work and sign with pen names.
A business named in an article is a lead to check, not a guarantee.
Pages load without analytics, ad networks or tracking scripts.
Reading needs no account, sign-up or subscription.
Reader email is the only way in, and corrections are answered first.
